The one question that runs through all of these
Nearly every part on this list is judged by a measurement, and that measurement has a number you can be told. Microfarads against the rating printed on a capacitor. Amp draw against rated load amps on a compressor. Flame current in microamps on a flame sensor. Voltage in and voltage out on a control board. So the question that does the most work, across every page here, is simply: what did it measure, and what should it have read? Anyone who has genuinely tested a part can answer that in seconds, and nobody competent minds being asked. Anyone who cannot answer it has given you an opinion rather than a diagnosis.
Part by part
AC capacitor
The most replaced part in the trade and the easiest to sell without proof. Ask for two numbers: what it measured and what it is rated for.
AC compressor
The most expensive misdiagnosis there is. One of the cheaper explanations fixes itself if the unit is left off for four hours.
Condenser fan motor
Usually the capacitor, not the motor. And a dead outdoor fan is a common reason a healthy compressor gets condemned.
Evaporator coil
Low refrigerant is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The leak has to be found, and it is often somewhere far cheaper.
Furnace blower motor
Most failures start with restricted airflow. On variable speed motors, ask whether it is the motor or just the module.
Furnace control board
The default scapegoat, because it is the one part that can be blamed without a test. Two questions settle it.
Flame sensor
The most unnecessarily replaced part on a furnace. Cleaning usually fixes it. Ask what the reading went to afterwards.
Furnace igniter
Three faults look identical from the hallway and only one is the igniter. Watching one cycle separates them.
Reversing valve
Often a thermostat setting rather than a failed part. And the coil on it costs a fraction of the valve.
Two patterns worth recognising
The first is a part quoted with no stated cause. Compressors, coils and control boards rarely fail on their own — something killed them, and if nobody identifies what, the replacement inherits the same fault. On an expensive part, “what caused this?” is a fair question and an incomplete quote cannot answer it. The second is parts replaced one at a time across a season, each failing to fix the problem, ending in a quote for a whole new system. Sometimes a difficult fault genuinely unfolds that way. Often it means nobody diagnosed it properly at the start. If you are two parts into that sequence, a second opinion costs a great deal less than the third part.

How do I know a part diagnosis is real?
Ask what was measured and what it should have read. Almost every part on this list has a number attached to it: microfarads against the printed rating on a capacitor, amp draw against rated load amps on a compressor, flame current in microamps on a flame sensor. A technician who tested it can give you both numbers in seconds. One who cannot did not test it.
Is there data on how often parts get replaced unnecessarily?
No. We looked for it properly across federal agencies, industry bodies and the trade press, and no published measurement of HVAC misdiagnosis rates exists. Anyone quoting you a percentage invented it. What does exist is federal data on how often installed systems carry faults, and that is substantial.
What should a technician be able to show me?
The measured reading, the rated value it is being compared against, and where relevant the failed part itself or a photograph of it. On an expensive part, also what caused the failure. A compressor or a board quoted with no stated cause is an incomplete quote, because whatever killed the first one is still there.
