“The Blower Motor Has Gone” — What to Establish First

This is the fan that moves air through your house. When one fails early, something usually made it fail, and on the variable speed motors there is a question worth asking that can change the bill considerably.

What the part actually does

There are two kinds and they fail differently, so the first question is which one you have.

It moves all the air in the house

Heating and cooling both. When it struggles, everything downstream of it looks broken.

The older type runs on a capacitor

A conventional motor with a run capacitor. Modest cost, and the capacitor is a common cause of it appearing dead.

The newer type has electronics attached

A variable speed motor with a control module. This is a genuinely expensive part, and it is where the repair-or-replace question becomes real for a blower.

On many models the module is separate

The electronics and the motor itself can often be replaced independently. Condemning the whole assembly when only the module failed is a real and expensive error.

This is the pattern behind most early blower failures.

Replacing the motor without fixing the airflow

You will be doing it again

The trade guidance is direct about this: if you replace the blower motor without fixing the underlying restriction, you carry on hitting the same obstacle. A restricted system makes the motor work harder, run hotter and trip its own overload. Federal data found half to nine tenths of installed systems already running below the airflow they need.

What you can do that genuinely matters

Change the filter, and look at the old one

How bad it was is useful information

A collapsed or completely loaded filter is not just the cause — it tells a technician how long the motor has been fighting. Keep it to show them.

Open every supply and return register

Closed vents strangle the system

Rooms closed off to save money is one of the most common causes of a furnace running hot and a blower running hard.

Check the furnace door is properly latched

A loose door switch stops everything

The furnace will not run at all with the panel not seated, and it presents as a dead system.

Write down the flash code

Before you call anyone

The light on the furnace control flashes a pattern. Count it and note it. The legend is usually printed inside the door, and that code alone often tells you whether the story you are given is plausible.

What should be checked before a motor is quoted

In roughly this order.

The filter and the duct system

Dirt is the most common culprit

This is not a brush-off. A restricted system is the leading reason blower motors fail early, and it needs establishing before the motor is blamed for its own working conditions.

The blower wheel itself

Vanes packed with dust move far less air

A loaded wheel raises the current draw and starves the system. It cleans, and cleaning it is a fraction of a motor.

The capacitor, on the older motors

Same trap as the outdoor fan

A cheap part that stops the motor dead and gets a motor quoted instead.

Whether the motor is being told to run

Especially on a variable speed motor

One of these that receives no valid signal does absolutely nothing and looks broken. The proper procedure proves the input before condemning the motor, and skipping that step condemns healthy motors.

Module or motor

Ask which one was tested and which one is being replaced

On many variable speed assemblies these are separate parts at very different prices. It is an entirely fair question and a good technician will have an answer.

Four things worth knowing

This is the one blower question where repair or replace is genuinely close

On the older capacitor-driven motors, this is a modest part and almost always worth repairing. On a variable speed motor it is a different conversation, because the part is expensive enough that on an ageing furnace it can reach a meaningful fraction of what a replacement furnace costs. Two rules of thumb circulate in the trade — not to spend more than half the cost of replacement on a repair, and a stricter figure than that on genuinely old equipment. Neither is a standard and we would not present them as one, but they are a reasonable way to frame the question. What we would actually do is establish the warranty position first, then give you both numbers written down, and let you decide with the figures in front of you rather than in the moment on a cold day.

The fan runs but the air is weak. Is the motor failing?

It might be, and restricted airflow produces exactly the same complaint. Filter, registers, return, and the blower wheel itself all come before the motor. A wheel packed with dust moves dramatically less air while the motor runs perfectly.

What is the difference between the motor and the module?

On a variable speed blower the electronics that control the motor are often a separate replaceable part from the motor itself. They fail independently and they cost very different amounts. If you have been quoted the whole assembly, it is worth asking which part was actually tested.

The blower runs constantly and will not stop.

Check the thermostat fan setting is on Auto rather than On, which accounts for a surprising number of these. If it is already on Auto, that points at a relay or the control board rather than the motor.

Is a noisy blower a failing motor?

Grinding or squealing does point at bearings. Rattling or a rhythmic knock is more often the wheel, something loose in the cabinet, or debris. They are different repairs at very different prices.

How long should a blower motor last?

There is no published field data for these as individual components, so any specific number you are quoted is someone repeating a figure rather than citing one. What is fair to say is that they last considerably longer in a system with clean filters and open registers, because heat and restriction are what kills them.
