Lennox: What an Owner Should Actually Know

Lennox International is one of the few genuinely independent players left — publicly traded, headquartered in Richardson, Texas, not part of a larger conglomerate. It also owns Allied Air Enterprises, which puts out Armstrong Air, AirEase, Ducane, Concord and Aire-Flo. Those are Lennox-family equipment under different names.

Manufacturing runs out of Marshalltown, Iowa, rebuilt after a tornado destroyed much of it in 2018, plus Saltillo, Mexico, and Allied Air’s plant in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

One recent change worth knowing if you are shopping for ductless: in 2024 Lennox and Samsung formed a fifty-fifty joint venture for mini splits, heat pumps and VRF in the US and Canada, and “Lennox Powered by Samsung” lines arrived in 2025. A Lennox ductless system is increasingly Samsung hardware. That is not a criticism — Samsung builds a great deal of the world’s ductless equipment — but you should know what you are buying.

Lennox is premium equipment and its financial results suggest the market agrees: its home comfort segment reported margins above 21 percent for 2025, ahead of its larger competitors. You do pay for it.

On reliability, the same caution applies here as everywhere, and Lennox supplies its own illustration. In Consumer Reports’ owner surveys, Armstrong and AirEase clustered high — and those are Lennox’s own Allied Air badges. Lennox itself did not cluster with them. Same company, related engineering, different results. Over at Carrier the same pattern appears in reverse, with Day & Night scoring among the most reliable while sister brands Heil and Comfortmaker scored among the least.

When badges from one factory land at opposite ends of a table, the table is measuring installers, regions and channels rather than manufacturing.

The measured research is consistent about where the real variable is. The Department of Energy’s review of around forty-four field studies found 70 to 90 percent of installed systems had at least one performance-compromising fault; NIST put the energy cost of common installation faults at roughly 30 percent. Consumer Reports itself says the contractor matters most.

Lennox does not sell through the independent wholesalers everyone else uses. It runs its own network — over 200 Lennox stores, five factories, thirty distribution centres, serving more than 6,000 contractors — and markets it openly as having no middle man. Equipment is never sold online or direct to consumers.

Myth one: only a Lennox dealer can service your Lennox. Not true, and Lennox says so itself. Their own consumer FAQ states that homeowners have the option to work with any licensed professional installer. We have seen this claim made by Lennox dealers on their own websites, and the manufacturer’s published position contradicts it.

Myth two: you cannot get Lennox parts. Also not true. Genuine Lennox parts — capacitors, motors, control boards, igniters, thermostats — are sold openly by independent parts retailers.

What is actually true, and worth planning around: the stocking footprint is smaller. Roughly 200 Lennox outlets nationally, against 690 branches at the largest independent distributor plus 390 co-operative stores plus several other national chains carrying everyone else’s parts. For a common wear part that makes no difference. For a proprietary Lennox part — a communicating control board, a model-specific coil — it can be the difference between collecting it this morning and waiting for it to ship. In a July outage that is a real cost, and it is fair to weigh it when you are choosing equipment.

Credit where it is due. Lennox lets you choose: extra parts years, or fewer parts years plus labour coverage, at no extra cost. Their own reasoning is worth quoting, because it is the truest thing any manufacturer says about repair bills — the average cost of a repair is about 85 percent labour and 15 percent parts.

Everybody else sells you parts coverage, which protects the small half of the bill. Lennox lets you protect the large half instead. If you are buying a Lennox, think hard about that option.

The one carve-out to know: the separate extended coverage Lennox sells requires a participating Lennox dealer to perform the repair. Their extended warranty terms are explicit that the owner must use a participating dealer. Their standard warranty carries no such restriction.
