How a gas fireplace lights

Most gas fireplaces with a standing pilot work the same way, and most no-flame calls come down to one of these parts.

Newer fireplaces with electronic ignition light the pilot only when you turn them on, using a control module and a battery backup instead. We repair both kinds.

Before you call

Check the easy things first

New batteries in the remote and in the receiver, which usually sits under the fireplace behind the lower grille. Make sure the gas key or valve is on, and for a fireplace with a blower, that its breaker hasn’t tripped.

Find the model number

It’s on a rating plate, usually behind the lower grille or on a chain under the firebox. A photo of it when you book lets us bring the right part the first time.

Smell gas? Leave first

Don’t light anything or flip switches. Get everyone outside and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. We fix the fireplace after the leak is made safe.

The glass gets hot

The glass front can burn a child’s hand long after the fire is off. Newer fireplaces come with a mesh screen in front of the glass for that reason, so keep it on.

Gas fireplace repair questions

Why won’t my gas fireplace pilot stay lit?

Usually the thermocouple. It sits in the pilot flame and holds the pilot gas on; when it wears out, or the pilot flame is too small or dirty to heat it properly, the pilot goes out as soon as you let go of the knob. Sometimes cleaning the pilot fixes it, and sometimes it needs a new thermocouple.

The pilot is lit, but the fireplace won’t turn on. Why?

On most gas fireplaces, the main burner runs on power from the thermopile, a small generator that sits in the pilot flame. A weak thermopile, a bad wall switch, a dead remote or receiver battery, or a loose wire stops the burner while the pilot keeps burning. We measure the thermopile’s output to tell which.

Why does my gas fireplace turn off by itself?

A weak thermopile or a dirty pilot is the most common reason. A blocked vent can also trip a safety switch, which is one to have checked rather than reset over and over.

How long does a gas fireplace repair take?

Most repairs are done in one visit of an hour or two. If your model needs a part we don’t carry, we make the fireplace safe, order the part and come back to fit it.

How much does gas fireplace repair cost?

It depends on the part. Cleaning a pilot or replacing a thermocouple is a small repair; a gas valve or control module a bigger one. Your exact price comes upfront and you approve it first.

Do you repair every brand?

Most of them, including Heat & Glo, Napoleon, Regency, Lopi, Valor, Mendota and Majestic. Send a photo of the rating plate when you book. We are not a dealer for any brand.

Do you repair wood-burning fireplaces or chimneys?

No. We do not work on wood-burning fireplaces, chimneys or masonry. We repair gas fireplaces, gas inserts and gas log sets.
