What we fix
Forced-air oil furnaces and their oil burners, including Beckett and Riello burners.
- Won’t start, or keeps tripping the reset
- Lights, then shuts down (lockout)
- Smoke, soot or an oil smell
- Rumble or puff when it starts
- Nozzle, oil filter and electrodes
- Igniter, cad cell and primary control
- Fuel pump and burner motor
- Yearly cleaning and combustion test
How an oil burner fires
An oil furnace lights in a set order. When one step fails, the safety at the end shuts it down.
If the cad cell doesn’t see flame within seconds, the primary control shuts the burner off and the reset button pops. Every press of reset sprays more oil into a chamber that didn’t light, which is why you press it once at most.
Before you call
Press reset once, not again
If the furnace has stopped, press the red reset button on the burner one time. If it doesn’t start and stay running, leave it. Pressing again and again floods the chamber with oil, which can ignite all at once and blow soot through the house.
Check the oil first
Look at the gauge on the tank. If it ran dry, sludge from the bottom can clog the filter and nozzle, and the pump has to be bled after a delivery. That’s a service call, not a reset.
Soot is a warning
Black soot around the burner or the vent pipe, a smoky smell, or a puff when it lights means it’s burning badly. Turn it off and book.
What we don’t do
We work on forced-air oil furnaces. We do not remove or replace oil tanks, and we do not service oil boilers or radiators.

Oil furnace questions
My oil furnace won’t start. What should I check?
That the thermostat is set to heat, the furnace’s power switch is on (often a red switch at the top of the basement stairs or by the furnace), and that there is oil in the tank. Then press the reset button once. If it still won’t run, stop there and call.
Why shouldn’t I keep pressing the reset button?
Each press pumps oil into a chamber that didn’t light. Enough unburned oil can ignite all at once, a puffback, and spray soot through the house. Most burner controls lock out after a few tries for exactly that reason.
What does an oil furnace tune-up include?
A new nozzle and oil filter, electrodes cleaned and set, the burner and combustion chamber cleaned, soot cleared from the heat exchanger, a combustion test with an analyzer, the draft set, and the safety controls tested.
How often should an oil furnace be serviced?
Every year, before the heating season. Oil leaves soot behind, and soot lowers efficiency, clogs the nozzle and blocks the flue passages over a single winter.
How long does an oil furnace service take?
Usually an hour and a half to two and a half hours. It takes longer than a gas furnace because of the cleaning and the combustion test.
How much does oil furnace repair cost?
It depends on the part. A nozzle, filter or electrode adjustment is the low end; a burner motor, fuel pump or primary control costs more. You get the exact price before any work starts and you approve it first.
Should I repair my oil furnace or switch to a heat pump?
If the furnace is 20 years old or more, needs a big repair, or the oil bills hurt, a heat pump is worth pricing. It heats with electricity, ends the oil deliveries and adds cooling. We price both, and the old tank is then decommissioned by a tank contractor.
