Smart Thermostat vs Basic

The saving does not come from the thermostat being clever. It comes from the house not being heated while nobody is in it.

The short answer

Worth it if your schedule changes. A basic programmable one is fine if it does not.

Any thermostat that turns the heat down while you are out or asleep saves you money. A smart one does that by itself, adjusts when your plans change, and lets you fix it from your phone when they change again. If your week is identical every week, a simple programmable model gets you most of the same saving for a lot less.

Side by side

Both sides, plainly, including what each one is bad at.

Smart thermostat

Learns your routine, adjusts itself, works from your phone.

  • Turns the heat down when the house empties, without you remembering
  • Change it from anywhere — useful when plans move
  • Shows you where your energy actually goes
  • Warns you about problems and filter changes
  • Costs more to buy
  • Some older systems need an extra wire run to power it
  • It needs your wifi, and it wants an app
  • The saving is small if you were already turning it down by hand

Basic programmable

You set a schedule once and it follows it.

  • Cheap, and it gets most of the same saving
  • Nothing to connect, nothing to update, no app
  • Anyone in the house can work it
  • Usually a straight swap on the wall
  • It only follows the schedule you gave it
  • You cannot change it from outside the house
  • No warnings, no reports, no reminders

Which one is you?

Get a smart one if…

Your hours move around, the house is empty at different times each week, you travel, or you have a rental or a second property to keep an eye on. Those are the situations where it genuinely earns the difference back.

A basic one is plenty if…

Your household keeps regular hours, or somebody is home most of the day anyway. Set a sensible schedule on a simple model and you have captured nearly all of the available saving.

Quick answers

How much will a smart thermostat actually save me?

It depends entirely on what you do now. If you leave the heat at one temperature all day and night, a thermostat that turns it down while you are out or asleep makes a real difference. If you already do that by hand, the saving is modest and the convenience is the real benefit.

What is the C-wire everyone talks about?

It is a wire that gives the thermostat constant power. Older homes often do not have one, because an old thermostat did not need power. There are ways around it, and we check what you have before quoting so there are no surprises.

Will any smart thermostat work with my system?

Most, but not all. Heat pumps and multi-stage systems need a thermostat that understands them, and fitting the wrong one causes the backup heater to run when it should not — which costs money rather than saving it. We check the match first.

Can I install one myself?

Many people do, on a simple system. Take a photo of the existing wiring before you disconnect anything, and turn the power off at the breaker first. If your system is a heat pump, or the wires do not match the new instructions, that is the point to stop and call.

Does it work if my internet goes down?

Yes. It keeps running its schedule normally. You just lose the phone control and the reporting until the connection comes back.
