Quick answers
What do AFUE and SEER2 mean?
They are the efficiency scores. AFUE is for furnaces and is a percentage — 80 percent means 80 cents of every dollar of gas becomes heat in your house. SEER2 is for air conditioners and heat pumps, and higher is better. You do not need to understand the maths, only that higher costs more today and less each month.
How long until the upgrade pays for itself?
Commonly eight to twelve years, depending on the price difference and how much you run the system. Heating pays back faster here than cooling, because our winters are long and our summers are short.
Is high efficiency more likely to break?
Not more likely, but the parts are more sophisticated, so a repair later can cost more than the same repair on a basic model. Yearly servicing matters more on this equipment than on a simple one.
Does high efficiency need different installation?
A 95 percent furnace vents through plastic pipe rather than the old metal flue, and it produces water that has to drain away. That work is part of the install and it is priced upfront, but it is worth knowing it is not simply a swap.
