Mini split installation, honestly priced

A Mini Split Without Overpaying

Ductless is priced by the number of rooms you cover, so the easiest way to inflate a quote is to cover rooms you did not need covered.

Six ways ductless quotes get inflated

A head in every room, whether it earns its place or not
Oversized heads that short-cycle and feel worse
Rebates never mentioned, or quietly kept
A price with a deadline attached to it
No permit, no inspection, cheaper today
Line covers, pads and disconnects added at the end

How it works when you book

What actually keeps a ductless installation bill down

Be honest about which rooms you actually use. An open main floor is often one head, not three, and warmth drifts down a hallway further than people expect — closed bedrooms are the ones that genuinely need their own. Every head you add is real money, so start with the rooms you live in and add later if you must, which ductless lets you do. Ask about rebates before signing, and get every quote onto the same number of zones and the same outdoor unit before deciding anyone is expensive.

Quick answers

How many heads do I really need?

Fewer than most quotes assume. One for an open living space, one for each closed bedroom you want genuinely comfortable, and honesty about the rooms you barely enter. Anyone specifying a head per room without walking the house and asking how you live in it is selling zones, not comfort.

Why is one ductless quote so much higher?

Usually zone count and head type. Wall units, ceiling cassettes and low-wall units are different prices, and a four-zone system against a two-zone system is a different purchase entirely. Line the quotes up by number of zones first.

Can I add heads later?

Yes, if the outdoor unit is sized with that in mind — which is worth saying out loud at quote time. It is one of the real advantages of ductless over ducted, and it means you can start with the rooms that matter and expand rather than buying the whole house at once.

Are the cheapest online systems worth it?

Be careful. Equipment bought online often carries no installer warranty, and manufacturers commonly void the parts warranty on a self-supplied unit fitted by someone else. Most companies will not install one, and the ones who will may not stand behind it. The saving tends to evaporate the first time something fails.

Do I need a permit for ductless?

Yes, and skipping it is one of the quiet ways a quote gets cheaper. It matters at resale and for the warranty, and the inspection is a free extra check on the work. A company happy to skip it is telling you about the rest of the job.
