Mini split repair, honestly priced

Mini Split Repair Without Overpaying

The commonest ductless fault is a blocked drain. It gets quoted as a refrigerant problem, and sometimes as a whole new system.

Mini split indoor unit in a Washington home

Six ways people get overcharged on a mini split repair

A blocked drain quoted as a refrigerant fault
"We cannot service that brand" — so replace it
An error code nobody actually looked up
Filters left dirty, then blamed on the equipment
No readings taken, straight to a price
One number, with no parts and labour split

How it works when you book

What actually keeps a mini split repair bill down

Take the front cover off the indoor unit and check the filters first. They are thin mesh screens that slide out, they clog fast, and a clogged pair causes both the weak-airflow and the dripping-water symptoms that get quoted as serious faults. Rinse, dry completely, refit. Second, note the blinking-light pattern and the brand before you call — that pattern is an error code, and telling us up front often means the right part is already on the van instead of costing you a second visit.

Quick answers

Water is running down the wall. Is that expensive?

Usually not, and that is the point. It is nearly always a blocked condensate drain rather than a refrigerant problem — the unit makes water when it cools, and if the drain clogs the water goes where it can. Clearing it is one of the cheaper jobs we do. Being quoted a new system for it is worth a second opinion.

They said nobody can service my brand. Is that true?

Rarely. Parts availability varies and some off-brand imports are genuinely awkward, but "we cannot service it" is very often "we do not stock it and would rather sell you ours". Ask specifically which part is unavailable and from whom. That question usually settles it.

The light is blinking. Does that tell you what is wrong?

Often, yes. The blink pattern is an error code and it varies by manufacturer. Count the blinks, note the brand, and tell whoever you call. A technician who does not ask about it is diagnosing with one hand behind their back.

Is a mini split repair worth it, or should I replace the head?

Depends which part. Boards and fan motors are ordinary repairs on a system with life left. What changes the sum is a sealed refrigerant fault on an older multi-zone system, and even then only the affected part usually needs attention rather than the whole installation.

Do all the heads have to be the same age?

No. Heads can be added or replaced individually as long as the outdoor unit has the capacity, which is one of the genuine advantages of ductless. Being told the entire system must be replaced because one head failed deserves a hard question.
