How often does a heat pump actually need servicing?
Twice a year is the honest answer, because it works in both seasons and accumulates roughly double the running hours of a furnace. Once a year is defensible on a young system. Quarterly is a subscription looking for a justification.
Should refrigerant be topped up as part of a service?
No. A heat pump is a sealed system and does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it is leaking, and that needs a leak search rather than a routine line on a service bill. Refrigerant appearing at every visit means a leak is being managed rather than fixed — and you are paying for it twice over.
What should a proper heat pump service include?
Cleaning both coils, checking the defrost cycle actually works, verifying the backup heat comes on only when it should, measuring pressures and the temperature split, checking the electrical connections, and clearing the condensate drain. The defrost and backup-heat checks are the two most often skipped, and they are the two that cost you most on the bill when they are wrong.
Does servicing keep the warranty valid?
For most manufacturers, yes — their terms ask for documented annual maintenance, and a claim on an expensive sealed part can be refused without it. Given those parts are the expensive ones, the record is worth more than the visits cost.
