Six ways people get overcharged on a heat pump repair
How it works when you book
- 1
You are shown the fault, not told about it A reading, a photo, or the part in our hand. If we cannot show you, we have not proved it.
- 2
You get the repair price and the replacement price together Both numbers, in writing, so you can judge them against each other rather than against nothing.
- 3
Nothing happens until you say so You approve the price first. If the honest answer is that it can wait, we say that instead.
What actually keeps a heat pump repair bill down
Check the warranty before anything else. The big parts inside a heat pump commonly carry a ten-year warranty from the manufacturer, and if yours is still covered you may be paying labour only — which turns a replacement conversation straight back into a repair. It is free to look up from the model and serial number, and a company that quotes a big part without checking has cost you money before it started. After that, ask what was measured: a heat pump that is genuinely underperforming shows it in the numbers.

Quick answers
How do I check the warranty myself?
Find the model and serial number on the outdoor unit’s data plate and call the manufacturer, or give them to us and we will look it up. Registration and original install date matter, so have those if you can. Ten years on the sealed parts is common, and nobody applies it automatically — someone has to ask.
My heat pump steams and stops heating for a few minutes. Is that a fault?
No, that is the defrost cycle doing exactly what it should. The outdoor coil collects frost in our damp winters, the system melts it off, and the steam is meltwater evaporating. It lasts a few minutes and then heating resumes. Being sold a repair for that is being sold nothing.
My electricity bill jumped. Is the heat pump broken?
Maybe, but check the setup first. If the backup heating element is running when it should not be — wrong thermostat, wrong wiring, a setting changed — the bill climbs hard while the equipment itself is fine. That is a configuration fix, not a new system, and it gets misdiagnosed constantly.
Is a big sealed repair worth doing on an older heat pump?
It depends on the warranty and the age. Past twelve to fifteen years with no coverage left, a big sealed repair gets close enough to a new system that you should see both numbers. Under ten, or still covered, fixing it usually wins comfortably.
Why do heat pumps need repairs sooner than furnaces?
Because they work in both seasons. A furnace rests all summer; a heat pump keeps running. Roughly double the hours means it reaches the end of its life sooner, and that is normal rather than a sign you bought badly.
