Heat pump installation, honestly priced

A Heat Pump Without Overpaying

This is the biggest single spend in the whole category, and the one where two honest quotes can still be thousands apart. Here is why.

Six ways heat pump quotes get inflated

No load calculation, size guessed from the old system
Oversized, which costs comfort as well as money
Rebates never mentioned, or quietly kept
A price with a deadline attached to it
No permit, no inspection, cheaper today
Electrical work bundled in without a separate line

How it works when you book

What actually keeps a heat pump installation bill down

Ask about rebates before you sign, not after. PSE and Washington income-qualified programs may apply, the amounts are meaningful, and some require the paperwork to be filed a particular way at the time of install — miss that and the money is gone. We check what is genuinely active on the day we quote rather than promising something that has expired. Then insist on a load calculation, get every quote onto the same size and efficiency before comparing, and buy in the shoulder season rather than the week your old system dies.

Quick answers

Why are heat pump quotes so far apart?

More variables than any other job: size, efficiency tier, whether it is a cold-climate model, whether your electrical supply needs work first, and whether ducts are involved. Two honest companies can legitimately land thousands apart. Get them onto the same specification before deciding anyone is expensive.

Is the electrical work a real cost or an upsell?

It can be genuinely necessary — some older homes do not have the capacity for a heat pump without work first. What is not acceptable is it appearing as an unexplained lump. It should be its own line with its own explanation. We do not do electrical work ourselves, so if yours needs it we will tell you plainly and you can get that priced separately, which is usually cheaper anyway.

Do I need the cold-climate model here?

Usually not. Lowland Western Washington rarely sits far below freezing, which is comfortably within a standard heat pump’s range. Cold-climate models carry a real premium and earn it in genuinely cold places. If someone is pushing one for a Puget Sound lowland house, ask them to justify it against your actual winter temperatures.

Will it really cut my heating bill?

It depends entirely on what you heat with now. Replacing electric baseboard or an electric furnace, the saving is large and reliable — commonly 40 to 60 percent. Against cheap natural gas it is much closer, and the honest pitch there is the free air conditioning rather than a dramatic bill cut. Anyone promising huge savings without asking what you currently heat with has not done the sum.

Should I keep my gas furnace as well?

Often a good idea if it is in decent shape. The heat pump handles the mild majority of our winter and the furnace covers the cold snaps. It costs less than a full changeover and it suits this climate. It should be offered as an option, not hidden because the full replacement is a bigger sale.
