Quick answers
Does a heat pump actually work in Seattle winters?
This climate is close to ideal for one. Lowland Western Washington rarely sits far below freezing, which is exactly where modern heat pumps are strongest. The handful of hard nights a year are covered by a backup heater inside the system.
Is a heat pump just an AC that runs backwards?
Essentially, yes. The extra piece is a valve that swaps which coil takes heat in and which one lets it out. That is how the same box cools you in July and warms you in January.
Will it replace my furnace completely?
Sometimes. If you heat with electricity, yes and gladly. If you have a good gas furnace, many people keep it and run the two together — heat pump for the mild 90 percent of winter, gas for the cold snaps.
Does a heat pump cool as well as a real AC?
Identically. In cooling mode it is doing exactly the same thing with exactly the same kind of equipment. There is no comfort penalty in summer at all.
What does it cost to run in winter?
Less than electric baseboard by a wide margin, commonly 40 to 60 percent less. Against cheap natural gas it is much closer, and the free air conditioning usually tips it.
