Why are three quotes so far apart?
Usually equipment and scope rather than dishonesty. A single-stage 80% furnace and a modulating 95% furnace are different machines with different prices, and one quote may include a permit, a new thermostat and haul-away while another quietly does not. Line them up item by item before you conclude anyone is ripping you off.
Do I actually need the high-efficiency one?
It depends entirely on how long you are staying. High efficiency costs more up front and less every month, and the crossover is commonly eight to twelve years out. Staying that long, take it. Moving sooner, the standard unit is the better financial decision and we will tell you so.
Is a permit really necessary?
Yes, and skipping it is how a quote gets cheaper. It matters at resale, it matters for the manufacturer warranty, and an inspection is a free second pair of eyes on the work. A company willing to skip the permit is telling you something about the rest of the job.
Should I replace the AC at the same time?
Only if it is also near the end. They share the cabinet and the install labour, so doing both at once genuinely costs less than doing them a year apart — but if your AC is young and working, keep it. Anyone insisting both must go together, regardless of the AC’s age, is selling.
What does "today only" pricing actually mean?
