How do I know if the cracked heat exchanger is real?
Ask to see it. A heat exchanger crack is found with a camera or a combustion analyser, and a technician who has genuinely found one can show you the image or the reading. It is a serious safety fault and shutting the furnace down is the right call when it is real — which is exactly why it is the most abused claim in the trade. If nobody showed you, that is not a diagnosis, it is a sentence.
They want to replace the whole furnace. Is that ever right?
Sometimes, genuinely. Past fifteen years with an expensive part failed, replacing is usually the better spend. What should make you pause is a replacement recommendation for a part that is one of the cheapest in the machine, or a replacement recommended on age alone with nothing actually broken.
Is the cheapest quote the one to take?
Not automatically, and we would say that even when ours is the cheapest. Check that all the quotes cover the same work, that parts and labour are split out, and that the company is licensed and insured. A number that is far below the rest usually means something has been left out of it.
Can I supply my own part to save money?
Most companies will not fit a part you bought, and there is a fair reason: nobody can warrant a part they did not source. If it fails, you pay the labour twice. The saving is usually smaller than it looks.
What if I cannot afford the repair right now?
