What actually keeps a maintenance bill down
Book it in early autumn rather than the first freezing week, when the calendar is empty and the price is calm. Ask for the readings, not just the verdict — a real service produces numbers, and a technician who took them will hand them over. Change your own filter on time between visits, because a clogged filter causes a share of the faults a tune-up is meant to catch. And keep the paperwork: most manufacturers require documented annual servicing to honour the warranty, which is the part homeowners find out about too late.

What should a proper furnace tune-up include?
Cleaning the parts that get dirty, checking the electrical connections and the safety controls, testing the flame and combustion, measuring how the system is actually performing against how it should, and inspecting the parts known to wear. If you cannot tell from the paperwork which of those happened, ask.
They found four things wrong. Is that normal?
On an older furnace that has never been serviced, quite possibly. On a five-year-old furnace, four findings in one visit is worth a second opinion. Either way, ask for the measurement behind each one. "It is weak" is an opinion; a reading outside its specified range is a fact.
Are maintenance plans worth it?
They can be, if the discount and the visits are real and you can cancel without a fight. Read what happens after the first year before you sign. A plan that renews automatically at a higher price is a subscription, not a service.
Does maintenance actually save money?
It does two things reliably: it keeps the manufacturer warranty valid, and it finds small faults in September instead of January. What it cannot do is promise nothing will ever break. Anyone claiming otherwise is overselling it.
Can I skip a year?
On a nearly new furnace where you change the filter on time, probably nothing happens. Just check your own warranty terms first, because plenty of them ask for a documented service from year one, and a refused claim on a big part costs far more than the visits you skipped.
