AC replacement, honestly priced

A New AC Without Overpaying

In cooling, paying for extra capacity does not buy you extra comfort. It buys you a damp house and a shorter-lived machine.

Six ways AC replacement quotes get inflated

Oversized, sold to you as a safety margin
No load calculation, just square footage
An efficiency tier our short summer cannot repay
A heat-wave price with a deadline on it
No permit, no inspection, cheaper today
A furnace added to the job that did not need replacing

How it works when you book

What actually keeps an AC replacement bill down

Buy in spring or autumn, never in the middle of a heat wave, because a system bought in a hot week is bought at the seller’s price. Insist on a load calculation rather than a size copied from the old unit — the old one may have been wrong too. Be sceptical of the top efficiency tier here: our cooling season is short, so an AC racks up few enough hours that a big efficiency premium can take longer to repay than the machine lasts. And if a heat pump is on the table, price it, because it does the same cooling and adds heating.

Quick answers

Is a bigger AC better?

No, and this surprises almost everyone. An oversized unit cools to the thermostat setting quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull the moisture out of the air. You end up cool, damp and uncomfortable, with a machine wearing itself out through constant starting. Right-sized runs longer, costs less and feels better.

Why is one quote thousands more than another?

Usually the efficiency tier and the size, sometimes the scope. A standard-efficiency two-ton and a high-efficiency three-ton are different purchases. Get all quotes onto the same size and same efficiency before deciding anyone is expensive.

Should I get a heat pump instead?

Worth pricing. A heat pump cools identically to an AC and heats as well, so instead of buying cooling now and heating later you buy one machine. In our climate that suits most homes, and there are Washington programs that sometimes apply. We will quote both and let you compare.

Do I need to replace the indoor coil too?

Usually yes, and it is not an upsell. The outdoor unit and the indoor coil are matched as a pair, and a new outdoor unit against an old mismatched coil will not deliver the efficiency you paid for. What you should question is a whole furnace added to the job when only the coil needed to change.

How long should the install take?

A straightforward changeover is one day. If someone is quoting several days without explaining why, ask what the extra work is — there may be a genuine reason, and you should know what you are paying for.
