What actually keeps an AC repair bill down
Book before the heat wave rather than on day three of it, when every company is triaging and nobody is negotiating. Change the filter and clear the outdoor unit first, because restricted airflow causes faults that look far more serious than they are. If refrigerant is the answer, ask where the leak is — a sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so a top-up without a leak search is a repair you will buy again next summer. And ask which part specifically failed, because the cheap part that helps the motor start and the expensive motor itself present almost identically.

They said the compressor is gone. How do I check?
Ask what was measured. The part that gives the motor its kick to start fails far more often than the motor itself, costs a small fraction of one, and produces the same symptom — a humming unit that will not run. Any competent technician tests that first. If nobody mentioned testing it, that is the question to ask before you agree to anything.
My AC needs refrigerant every year. Is that normal?
No. An air conditioner is a sealed system and does not use refrigerant up. If it needs topping up annually, it has a leak, and every top-up without a leak search is money you will spend again. Ask for a leak search, and if it is an old system running R-22 you should also see the replacement number beside the repair.
Does R-22 mean I have to replace the whole system?
Not on its own. If it is not leaking, keep using it. R-22 stopped being made in the US in 2020, so what changed is the price of a top-up rather than the legality of your equipment. A genuine leak in an R-22 system is the point where replacing usually wins on maths, not before.
Is the cheapest AC quote the right one?
Check they cover the same work first. Cheap sometimes means a top-up instead of a leak repair, or a part swapped without the diagnosis that explains why it failed. Both come back.
The unit is fifteen years old. Should I bother fixing it?
Often yes, for a small repair. Our cooling season is short, so an older unit here has far fewer running hours than the same model in a hot state. A cheap part that buys you the summer is usually money well spent. A big sealed repair is where the sum changes.
