Thermostat Problems: Work Out What You Are Actually Dealing With

A thermostat is a switch. Most of the time when one appears to have failed, the switch is fine and something behind it has stopped answering. There is one question that tells you which, and it takes five seconds.

First — is the screen alive or dead?

This is the most useful thing on this page and almost nobody writes it. Everything below depends on the answer.

The screen is lit and reading normally

Then the 24 volt supply reaching it is fine, and whatever is wrong sits downstream of the thermostat. The thermostat is doing its job of closing a circuit and something further along is not responding.

The screen is completely dark

Then the 24 volt supply itself has gone, and the thermostat is very often innocent. Several things upstream can cause this and most of them are not the thermostat.

It may not have batteries at all

Plenty of hardwired thermostats have none. And Google states outright that the batteries in a Nest Learning Thermostat and a Nest Thermostat E cannot be replaced — they are internal and recharge off the system.

If it is a heat pump, there is one extra wire

Heat pumps have a wire that tells the reversing valve which way to run. It is the most common way a do-it-yourself thermostat swap goes wrong, and it is worth reading the box further down before you blame the equipment.

What is actually going on

Stop — these are the ones where pushing on costs you real money

Each of these is a protective device doing exactly what it was fitted to do. Overriding them turns a contained problem into an expensive one.

A breaker that trips straight back

Reset it once. Never twice.

A breaker that goes again the moment you reset it is not being temperamental. On heating and cooling equipment that is a genuine fault, and repeatedly forcing it back on is how a fault becomes something worse.

A blown fuse on the control board

The fuse is the symptom, not the problem

The furnace board carries a small automotive-style blade fuse — Goodman specifies a three amp one on its furnace line. It blows because something shorted, and in a home context the usual something is a bare thermostat wire touching the metal cabinet while a thermostat was being changed. Fitting a new fuse without finding the short simply blows the new one, and repeated attempts are hard on the transformer.

A safety switch that has cut the power because of water

It is stopping water coming through your ceiling

Many systems have a float switch that shuts things down when the condensate drain blocks. Building code requires overflow protection that shuts off the equipment, and the switch manufacturers let the installer choose which wire to interrupt — a great many deliberately kill the thermostat entirely, so that you get a blank screen and call somebody rather than quietly running a system that is overflowing. If yours is dark and there is standing water in the drain pan, that is the switch earning its keep.

Genuinely worth ten minutes before you book anything

Four of these are free, and between them they account for a great many of the calls we get about dead thermostats.

The furnace door is not quite shut

The most common blank thermostat there is

There is a plunger switch on the blower access panel. It interrupts the 120 volt supply to the transformer, which is why the thermostat goes completely dark rather than just the fan stopping. It catches people constantly after a filter change. Push the panel firmly home until it seats.

The service switch is off

It looks exactly like a light switch, because it is one

Electrical code requires a disconnect within sight of the furnace, and in practice that is an ordinary toggle in a single box on or beside the unit, or at the top of the basement stairs. People flip it thinking it is a light. Ignore anything telling you to look for a red cover plate — no rule requires one, and looking for red is how you walk straight past the white one.

The breaker at the panel

Worth one look, and only one reset

If it had tripped and it holds after a reset, you are probably fine. If it goes again, see the section above.

The filter

The manufacturer names this first, and so should we

Goodman puts it plainly in its own service instructions: improper filter maintenance is the most common cause of inadequate heating or cooling performance. If your complaint is that the system runs but never quite gets there, start here before anything else and it costs you nothing.

The batteries, if it has them

Only some thermostats do

Where they exist, a flat set will produce exactly the blank screen everyone fears. Where they do not, no amount of looking will find a battery door. See the note above about which Nest models have none.

Symptoms that look like the thermostat and usually are not

This is where the split at the top of the page earns its keep. A lit screen tells you the supply is fine and the fault is further along.

It calls for heat and nothing happens, but the screen is lit

The switch closed and nothing answered

Fuse, blower door, service switch, float switch or transformer. On a cooling call where the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit stays silent, it is more often a contactor or a capacitor outside.

It runs but never reaches the temperature you set

Airflow, nine times out of ten

Filter first, then every supply register open, then nothing stacked against the return. Goodman documents what happens next: restricted airflow trips the limit, the burner shuts down, and the blower keeps running until things cool. That is the real mechanism behind a furnace that blows but never gets warm.

It turns on and off every few minutes

Four common causes and only one of them is the thermostat

Restricted airflow tripping the limit; the thermostat sitting where sunlight or a supply register hits it; a smart thermostat that is not getting enough steady power; or equipment simply oversized for the house so it satisfies before it has distributed anything.

Set to 72, the room feels like 76, the thermostat insists it is 68

The thermostat is probably not lying to you

It is reading its own spot rather than the room. On an exterior wall, or with an unsealed wire hole behind it letting crawlspace air blow across the sensor, it genuinely is in a colder pocket. Goodman and Resideo both tell installers the same thing: about five feet up, on an inside wall, away from registers, sunlight, lamps and concealed pipes.

The fan never stops

Check one setting before anything else

Make sure the fan is set to Auto rather than On. If it is already on Auto and the blower still runs continuously, that points at a relay or the board rather than the thermostat.

Five things the internet gets wrong about thermostats

If you have a heat pump and it started heating when you asked for cooling

This is the classic do-it-yourself thermostat swap failure and it is worth knowing about before you conclude the equipment is broken. A heat pump has a reversing valve, and a single wire tells it which way round to run. Depending on the manufacturer, that wire energises in cooling on some systems and in heating on others, and a new thermostat has a setting for which convention yours uses. Set it the wrong way and the system will do precisely the opposite of what you ask, perfectly and repeatably, with absolutely nothing broken anywhere. If your heat pump started behaving backwards immediately after a thermostat was changed, that setting is the first place anyone should look, and it is a short job for somebody who knows where it lives.

Can I replace a thermostat myself?

The wiring at a thermostat is 24 volts, so this is not the electrocution risk people imagine, and plenty of homeowners do it. There are two real risks worth knowing. The first is that a bare wire touching the plate or the cabinet shorts the transformer and blows the fuse on the control board — which is the single most common way a working system becomes a dead one. The second, on a heat pump, is the reversing valve setting described above. Turn the power off at the breaker first, and photograph the existing wiring before you disconnect a single wire.

What is a C wire, and do I need one?

It is the return path. The transformer sends 24 volts out on the R wire, and the thermostat closes that onto W, Y or G to call for something. A mechanical or battery thermostat never needed a way back, because it only acted as a switch. A wi-fi thermostat with a screen and a radio needs continuous power, so it needs that return path. Whether yours needs one depends on the model, and the answer is less predictable than the internet suggests.

My smart thermostat keeps making the system cycle on and off.

Google documents this behaviour itself and lists chattering, clicking, rapid cycling and delayed heating as symptoms of a thermostat that is not getting steady enough power — with a C wire or their own power connector as the fix. If yours started doing this after a smart thermostat went in, that is where to look first rather than at the furnace.

My thermostat is in a terrible spot. Does it have to move?

Often not any more. If it is a Nest or an ecobee, a remote sensor in the room that matters will usually solve it without touching the wall. If it is a basic thermostat in direct sun or beside a supply register, moving it is sometimes the honest answer — but we would rather look at what it is actually reading before anyone starts cutting.

Is a dead thermostat an expensive fix?

It depends entirely which of the causes on this page it turns out to be, and that is why we will not put a number on it here. Several of them cost you nothing but ten minutes. Others mean a part. What we can tell you is that you will have the price in writing before anything starts, and if the answer is that your thermostat is fine and nothing needs replacing, that is what we will say.
