The short answer
$150–$350
The switch itself is a small, inexpensive part. Most of the visit is finding out why it tripped, because a limit switch usually shuts the burners off for a reason, most often weak airflow.

What moves the price
Bad switch or a furnace running hot
A limit switch that trips because the furnace is overheating is doing its job. A new one on an overheating furnace trips exactly like the old one. Finding the airflow problem is the real repair.
Which switch it is
Furnaces have a main high limit and, on many models, rollout switches by the burners. A tripped rollout switch is a warning about flame or venting and needs the cause found first.
The right replacement part
Each limit is rated for one temperature on that furnace. It has to match the original rating exactly. A close-enough part or a jumper wire is a fire risk.
Access
Some limits sit right behind the burner panel. Others are behind the blower or a tight cabinet and take longer to reach.

Been told you need a new limit switch?
A limit switch rarely fails on its own. Most of the time it is working correctly and shutting the burners off because the furnace is getting too hot, usually from a clogged filter, blocked returns or a weak blower.
We test it and show you the result before anything is replaced. If it tests fine, we say so.

Quick answers
What does a furnace limit switch do?
It is a heat safety. If the air inside the furnace gets too hot, it shuts the burners off and keeps the blower running to cool things down. When the furnace cools, it tries again.
What are the signs of a bad limit switch?
The burners shut off after a few minutes while the fan keeps blowing cooler air, the furnace cycles on and off, or it will not light and the control board flashes a limit code. An overheating furnace shows the same signs, which is why it needs testing.
Is it the switch, or is my furnace overheating?
Check the filter first. A technician then measures the temperature rise across the furnace and compares it with the range printed on its label, and tests the switch itself. Ask what those two readings were.
Can I bypass it or replace it myself?
Never bypass it. It is the part that stops a furnace from overheating. A replacement with the wrong temperature rating is a hazard too. Changing a dirty filter is the right thing to try yourself.
My furnace has a rollout switch with a reset button. Can I just press it?
Once, yes. If it trips again, turn the furnace off and call. A rollout switch trips when flame comes out where it should not, which can point to a blocked flue or a heat exchanger problem.
How long does the repair take?
Swapping the switch is quick. Most of the visit is testing it and finding why it tripped, so the new one does not trip too.
