The short answer
$300–$1,000
The gas valve feeds the burners once the furnace has proven it’s safe to light. Valves fail less often than people think: most no-heat calls blamed on the valve turn out to be the igniter, the flame sensor or a switch earlier in the sequence. When a valve does fail, it’s replaced, never repaired.

What moves the price
Is it really the valve?
A valve only opens when the control board sends it power. We check for that signal at the valve. Power there and no gas through means the valve. No power means the problem is earlier in the sequence, and that’s usually a cheaper fix.
Single-stage, two-stage or modulating
Two-stage and modulating furnaces use valves that cost more than a standard single-stage one, and some brands’ valves come only through the manufacturer’s parts channel.
Setting it up
A new valve is set to your furnace’s gas pressure with a manometer, then leak-tested. That setup is part of the job, not an extra.
Warranty
Many furnaces carry 10-year parts coverage when they were registered. If the valve is covered, you pay the labor. We check before quoting.
Igniter glows, burners never light?
That can be the gas valve, but it’s often the igniter or flame sensor. We test before replacing anything. Exact price upfront.

Been told you need a new gas valve?
Gas valves get replaced on a hunch because the burners don’t light. The test is simple: is there 24 volts at the valve when it should open, and does gas come through at the right pressure? If the voltage isn’t there, the valve isn’t the problem. Ask what they measured.
We test it and show you the result before anything is replaced. If it tests fine, we say so.

Quick answers
What does a furnace gas valve do?
It controls the gas to the burners. It stays shut until the control board has checked the draft and the igniter, then opens and holds the flame at the right pressure. On a two-stage furnace it also switches between low and high fire.
What are the signs of a bad gas valve?
The igniter glows or sparks but the burners never light, the burners light and then drop out, or the flame is weak. A weak igniter, a dirty flame sensor or a closed gas shutoff cause the same signs, which is why it needs testing.
Can a furnace gas valve be repaired?
No. A gas valve is a sealed safety control. It’s replaced, never taken apart. The only adjustment is its outlet pressure, set with a manometer.
I smell gas near the furnace. What should I do?
Leave the house first. Don’t flip switches or light anything. Call 911 or Puget Sound Energy’s gas emergency line from outside. We fix the furnace after the leak is made safe.
Is it the gas valve or the igniter?
If the igniter glows and the valve is getting power but no gas flows, it’s the valve. If the igniter is weak, or the valve never gets power, it isn’t. We measure both and show you.
How long does a gas valve replacement take?
An hour or two once the part is on hand, including setting the gas pressure and leak testing.
