The short answer
Try the five easy checks first. Stop at anything involving gas, refrigerant or wiring.
A real share of the calls we get are solved by a filter, a breaker, a battery or a switch somebody did not know was there. Try those first — it costs nothing. But gas, refrigerant and electrical work are where DIY stops being thrifty and starts being dangerous.
Side by side
Both sides, plainly, including what each one is bad at.
Safe to try yourself
Free, quick, and it genuinely fixes a lot of calls.
- Change the filter — the single most common cause of no airflow
- Check the breaker for the furnace or outdoor unit is not tripped
- Put fresh batteries in the thermostat and check it is set to heat or cool
- Find the switch by the furnace that looks like a light switch, and check it is on
- Clear leaves, grass and anything stacked against the outdoor unit
- Make sure furniture and rugs are not covering the vents
- If it works and then fails again in a week, something real is wrong
- None of this replaces the yearly check
Call someone
Where the risk is real and the tools are not on sale to you.
- Anything to do with gas — a smell of gas means leave and call the gas company first
- Anything to do with refrigerant, which needs a licence to buy or handle
- Opening up electrical connections inside the equipment
- A breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it
- Any burning smell, scorch mark or water where water should not be
- It costs money, where the checks above cost nothing
- You have to wait for someone to arrive
Which one is you?
Try it yourself if…
The system is completely dead, or blowing but not heating or cooling, and you have not checked the filter, the breaker, the thermostat batteries and that switch by the furnace. Those four take five minutes and they solve a genuinely large share of the calls we get.
Call someone if…
You smell gas, you smell burning, the breaker trips again the moment you reset it, or the easy checks did nothing. Also call if the system is under warranty — opening it up yourself can end that cover, which turns a free repair into a paid one.

Quick answers
What is that light switch next to my furnace?
It is the furnace power switch. It looks exactly like an ordinary light switch, often on a wall or a joist nearby, and it gets flipped off by accident constantly — usually by someone carrying something through the garage or basement. Check it before you call anyone.
My breaker keeps tripping. Can I just keep resetting it?
No. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop. A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job and telling you something is wrong. Resetting it over and over risks a fire.
Can I add refrigerant myself?
No. It needs certification to buy and handle, the wrong amount makes the system worse, and a system low on refrigerant has a leak — adding more without fixing the leak just pays for gas that escapes again.
I smell gas. What do I do?
Leave the house, do not touch light switches, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. That comes before calling any HVAC company, including us.
Will doing something myself void my warranty?
Changing a filter or resetting a breaker, no. Opening the equipment and replacing parts inside it, very possibly yes. If it is still under warranty, the repair may cost you nothing anyway, so it is worth checking before you get the screwdriver out.
