What actually keeps a thermostat bill down
Try fresh batteries before you call anyone. A blank screen is a flat battery far more often than a failed thermostat, and plenty of models give no warning before they die. If it is genuinely being replaced, match the thermostat to the system rather than the shelf: a heat pump needs one that understands heat pumps, and fitting the wrong kind makes the backup heating element run when it should not, which costs you money every month instead of saving it. And on a single-stage furnace, the premium model controls nothing extra — there is nothing extra to control.

The screen is blank. Do I need a new one?
Try batteries first, and check the switch beside the furnace that looks like a light switch, and the breaker. Those three are free and they solve this more often than a new thermostat does. If the screen comes back and the system still does nothing, then the problem is worth a visit — but it may not be the thermostat at all.
What is the C-wire, and why does it cost extra?
It is a wire giving the thermostat constant power. Older homes often do not have one because an old thermostat did not need power. Adding it is real work and a real cost when it is genuinely needed — but there are also adapters, and some systems already have a spare wire in the bundle. Ask which of those applies to your house before accepting a wiring charge.
Will any smart thermostat work with my system?
Most, but not all, and this is where the money gets wasted. Heat pumps and multi-stage systems need a thermostat that understands them. The wrong one either will not control the system properly or will run expensive backup heat unnecessarily. Anyone selling you one without asking what system you have is guessing.
Can I fit it myself?
On a simple system, many people do. Photograph the existing wiring before disconnecting anything and turn the power off at the breaker first. If it is a heat pump, or the wire labels do not match the new instructions, that is the point to stop — a miswired heat pump thermostat is an expensive mistake in monthly bills rather than a dramatic failure you would notice.
Is the expensive smart one worth it?
Only if your schedule actually moves around. The saving comes from the heat being off when nobody is home, not from the thermostat being clever. If your household keeps regular hours, a simple programmable model captures nearly all of the same benefit for a fraction of the price.
