Daikin: What an Owner Should Actually Know

Daikin Industries is the largest air conditioning manufacturer in the world. It bought Goodman Global in 2012, and in April 2022 renamed the US entity Daikin Comfort Technologies. So Daikin, Goodman and Amana are three badges from one American operation with a Japanese parent.

The bulk of it is built at the Daikin Texas Technology Park at Waller, north-west of Houston — 4.23 million square feet under a single roof. A newer plant in Mexico builds mini splits and the inverter products that used to be shipped in from Asia.

Daikin describes the tiering in its own words: Daikin and Amana are positioned for premium customers, Goodman for value-conscious contractors. Shared engineering, different specification levels and different warranty terms.

Worth knowing if you own ductless: Daikin has been building inverter-driven equipment far longer than most of the American names, and it is the company that drove global adoption of R-32 more than a decade before the US transition.

When US residential equipment came off R-410A at the start of 2025, the industry split. Daikin, Goodman and Amana went to R-32. Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Rheem, Ruud and Mitsubishi all went to R-454B.

Because almost everyone chose the same one, R-454B went short. Honeywell added 42 percent to its price in February 2025 and raised it again in April, the third rise in four months. Manufacturers took measures to keep contractors supplied. Daikin owners watched all of that happen to other people.

None of this makes an R-32 system better at heating your house. It does mean that if yours needs refrigerant work in the next few years, the supply situation behind it is calmer. If your Daikin is older and runs R-410A, that is still serviceable — R-410A is not banned, production is simply being wound down, so the cost drifts up slowly over time.

Daikin is well-regarded equipment from a company with more experience of inverter-driven systems than most of the US market. It also gives you the longest registered parts warranty of anything on this site, which is a manufacturer putting its own money behind the equipment.

The general caution still holds, and we would rather be consistent about it than make an exception when the brand is a premium one. There is no credible public dataset showing that brand predicts how long HVAC equipment lasts. The owner surveys that produce brand rankings put sister badges from the same factories at opposite ends of the table — Day & Night among the most reliable and Heil and Comfortmaker among the least, all three from one owner and shared platforms.

What has been measured properly is installation. The Department of Energy’s review of around forty-four field studies found 70 to 90 percent of installed systems carrying at least one performance-compromising fault, with refrigerant undercharged in 29 to 78 percent and equipment oversized in 31 to 93 percent. NIST measured those faults costing roughly 30 percent in energy use. A carefully installed Goodman will outlive a carelessly installed Daikin, and that is not a comfortable thing for anyone selling equipment to say.
