Six ways air quality gets oversold
How it works when you book
- 1
We measure the house before we size anything Rooms, windows, insulation, orientation. Not a guess from the square footage or from whatever was there before.
- 2
You see the options side by side, with the payback The cheaper unit and the better one, and an honest read on whether you would ever earn the difference back.
- 3
The quote is itemised and it does not expire Equipment, labour, permit, haul-away, each on its own line. Take a week. Take it to someone else.
What actually keeps an air quality bill down
Start with the filter, because it is the cheapest intervention and the one most often skipped. A mid-range pleated filter changed on time does more for most homes than any piece of equipment, and going too fine is actively harmful — a filter your system cannot pull air through starves it and causes faults. Then fix the source rather than filtering the symptom: a bathroom fan that actually vents outside beats a purifier for damp, and keeping windows shut on a smoke day beats both. Only after that does equipment earn its place.
Been quoted for air quality equipment?

Quick answers
Do I need a whole-house purifier?
Most homes do not. A decent pleated filter, changed on time, handles ordinary dust, pollen and pet dander. Equipment earns its place for specific situations — a household with serious allergies, wildfire smoke season, or a genuine damp problem — and it should be recommended against a stated problem rather than a general worry.
Should I have my ducts cleaned every year?
We do not do it, so we have nothing to sell you here, which is exactly why this answer is worth reading. It is occasionally warranted — after a renovation, or with a genuine rodent or mould problem. As an annual routine it is one of the most oversold services in the industry. If someone is pushing it yearly, ask what specifically they found.
Is a higher MERV filter always better?
No, and this one costs people money. Higher ratings catch smaller particles but are harder to pull air through. Push it too far in a system not built for it and you restrict airflow, which can freeze an AC coil in summer or trip a furnace on its safety switch in winter. Home systems are generally happiest in the middle of the scale.
They showed me an air quality reading that looked alarming. Should I be worried?
Ask what the reading is being compared against, and what it was before. A number with no baseline and no threshold is theatre. A genuine measurement comes with what is normal, what yours is, and what specifically would change it.
What actually helps with wildfire smoke?
Keeping outside air out, a good filter changed more often during smoke season, and a portable unit in the room you sleep in. That combination costs far less than whole-home equipment and does most of the work. If smoke is your only concern, say so and let the recommendation match it.
