There’s Ice on Your AC

Ice in July means starved airflow or a refrigerant leak. Thaw it right — and don’t run it frozen.

The usual suspects

1

Starved airflow

A packed filter, weak blower or closed vents let the coil overshoot cold and ice over — then ice blocks even more air.

2

Low refrigerant from a leak

Lower pressure = colder coil. Clean filter but ice keeps returning? It’s a leak.

3

Running it on cool evenings

Below ~60°F outside, a standard AC’s pressures drop enough to freeze the coil.

4

A stuck contactor

The outdoor unit running non-stop — even with the thermostat off — force-feeds the freeze. Kill the breaker.

Keeps freezing up?

Two freezes with a clean filter = a leak until proven otherwise. We find it, fix it, and you approve the price first.

Quick answers

How long does thawing take?

With cooling off and the fan on, usually 2–4 hours; a solid block can take a day. Rushing it with tools is how coils get punctured.

Can I run it frozen if it still blows?

No — liquid refrigerant can slug the compressor, the most expensive part in the system. And ice blocks the cooling anyway.

It froze again after thawing. Now what?

That’s the leak signature. A tech confirms pressures, finds the leak and quotes the fix upfront — most are same-day.

Done guessing?

Running it frozen is how compressors die — and compressors are the expensive part. Book before it gets there.
